BI Leader SAS to Expand R&D Centre in Pune

(PRWEB) December 6, 2005

SAS, the global leader in business intelligence solutions, announced plans to develop its largest research and development (R&D) center outside the U.S. in Pune, India. SAS CEO Dr. Jim Goodnight announced the proposed 1,75,000 square foot SAS facility that will ramp up the operations of the companys India-based global R&D arm, SAS Global Services, and further fuel the growth of business intelligence in the country.

SAS is committed to India as a marketplace, where we have witnessed a very healthy growth for the last few years, Goodnight said. This investment reinforces our belief in India and will further grow the market with industry-specific capabilities and solutions. SAS also will look to expand its partnerships with leading Indian IT firms to build on the complementary strengths of these companies and SAS global experience to deliver the latest BI solutions to Indian customers. These partnerships will enable organizations to improve efficiencies and increase competitiveness in todays economy, both in India and abroad.

According to IDC, Indias BI market is growing at an annual rate of 27 percent and is expected to surpass US$ 87.4 million by the end of 2009 (Source: IDC India Packaged Software Market Tracker 2H 2004). IDC Indias report notes that SAS India, with a market share of 23 percent, led the countrys BI software market in 2004.

Commented SAS R&D Director Stephen Beatrous: SAS Global Services in Pune is an integral part of our R&D efforts, working closely with other locations in the U.S. and Europe. The new center will aid in building core competencies across product lines, such as developing user interfaces, testing new products and working on customized industry solutions. Our plans in India confirm our ongoing efforts to remain a customer-focused company with a deep commitment to innovative R&D.

Sudipta K. Sen, managing director and CEO of SAS India, said the expansion will help SAS keep pace with market demands. SAS India has emerged as the market leader in BI, and the company has already reached triple-digit growth in new sales this year. We are gearing up our operations in India to enhance the depth and breadth of SAS offerings across the country. Mr. Goodnights second visit at this juncture and the expansion plans in the country are testaments to SAS long-term commitment to India and the significance of the Indian market within SAS international operations.

SAS Global Services was established in 1999 and currently employs about 175 SAS developers who work with the other SAS R&D facilities around the globe in Denmark, UK, Japan, China and Germany.

SAS Indias strong customer base has more than 180 installations at such companies as Novartis, Standard Chartered Bank, ICICI Bank, HSBC Bank, GE Capital, Citibank N.A., Hindustan Lever Ltd., Pfizer, HDFC Bank, Reserve Bank of India and GlaxoSmithKline.
