Sovereign Default: Thinking the Unthinkable – Robert F. Lucas

Over the past 18 months, the world has witnessed the attempts of the European Union and the United States to deal with the possibility of sovereign defaults. This presentation outlines a framework to analyze sovereign default and then applies this framework in a discussion of the experiences of Ireland, Greece, Italy and the United States. Topics include the genesis of each country crisis and the steps taken to resolve the crisis. Dr. Lucas, a native of Saskatchewan, received his MA from the University of Saskatchewan and his Ph.D. from Brown University. He has held teaching appointments at Washington State University, and the University of California at Los Angeles. Dr. Lucas’ research interests include monetary theory and macroeconomic theory. Journals where his work has appeared include the American Economic Review, the Review of Economics and Statistics, the Canadian Journal of Economics, Oxford Economic Papers, the Manchester School, Canadian Public Policy and the Journal of International Trade and Economic Development. In addition, Dr. Lucas has collaborated with Robert Barro of Harvard University in writing a textbook in macroeconomic theory.
